A Study on the Sleep Amount of Patient and Environmental Factors Influencing to the Sleep Amount in Intensive Care Unit
Kim Myung-Ae

Suh Moon-Ja
Abstract
The purposes of this study were to identify the amount of sleep and to determine the factors of physical environment influencing to the sleep amount and patterns of patients in the Intensive Care Units. 72 subjects from MICU, SICU, CCU, RICU at SNUH were observed in 1987, directly by RNs trained by researcher specially for this study. In order to identify the sleep amount, it was measured for one minute per every hour during 24 hours for one patient, with sleep sheet developed on the basis of the criteria of sleep stage quoted form Kupfer(1970), DLin(1971), McFadden(1971) and to find the physical environmental factors influencing to the sleep amount, 3 environmental variables were defined operationally, such as physical settings, critical situations of other patients, and the number of the therapeutic equipments used for the subjects at that particular period. The results were obtained as follows : 1) The mean amount of sleep of ICU patients was insufficient comparing to that of normal adult, which implies ICU patient usually needs more nursing care for the good sleep. 2) There was significant difference in the amount of sleep according to the physical setting of ICU(p<0.05). 3) There was significant difference in the amount of sleep according to the presence of critical situations in ICU(p<0.05). 4) There was significant difference in the amount of sleep according to the number of therapeutic equipments used for patient in ICU(p<0.05).
